Erlang is pretty ersatz these days. What is ersatz? Is that a new programming language like Ruby or Objective C? Ersatz means esoteric or exotic. Erlang has been around for a while. It's rarely used these days, and the user base is small. How does that relate to Scala? Scala has a larger user base, though IT is still rapidly evolving. However, because it integrates well with Java, a major programming language that is a backbone of the internet, it is still going strong. Which programming language has more jobs? Scala, because of its integration with Java. Erlang is a niche language that's turning into the guy in the corner who still plays Dungeons and Dragons, while all the kids are learning Settlers of Catan. Meaning it is hardly ever used, and it's becoming a hobby language. You could learn Scalang. That sounds like a fake language from a sci-fi show, like Klingon from Star Trek. Scalang is a scala wrapper for interfacing with Erlang. I might as well learn Fortran. At least then I could borrow my Dad's programming books. Or learn Basic, which is pretty Basic. Hence the name. And it is the foundation of Visual Basic. So you think Scala is the wave of the future. Frankly, that's probably a variation of C or JavaScript or HTML5. But Scala has a stronger future than many other languages. Why doesn't Erlang have a future? Erlang runs on its own interpreter, which makes it like Sun Java systems. Java is great. There's a joke comparing various operating systems, where Microsoft is a car that has the engine stall every 15 minutes.
