Yet, people spend decades mastering it. It's obviously complicated, but one should be able to follow every possible combination of moves to their logical end. Since this is the kind of problem computers excel at, why haven't we solved chess yet? Well, before we go into that, let's go a little simpler. No, simpler. Let's go even simpler than that. There we go. Every one of the games you've just seen can be modelled by a graph, with the states of the game board being represented by a node in the graph, and moves being represented by edges. Tic Tac Toe is an ideal place to start. The graph for Tic Tac Toe contains a total of 5549 states, with no loops and a max tree depth of nine. That may seem like a lot, but it's trivial for a computer. You could even do it by hand if you had a few pencils, a notebook, and a day to waste. While the program I wrote computed the graph for Tic Tac Toe in less than five seconds, Connect 4 presents a new level of complexity. When a very similar algorithm was run on the standard 6 by 7 board used for Connect 4, the program ran for 27 minutes and then failed due to an out of memory error. The complexity of a game like Connect 4 or Chess increases faster than you might think. A four by four game of Connect 4 contains only 161029 states, but increase the height by only one row, and the new state graph contains over half a million states. According to John Tromp, who solved the standard 6 by 7 board through brute force, it contains around 4 times 10 to the 12 states. This may seem like a lot, and it is, but it is solvable. However, chess is estimated to contain a number of states on the order of ten to the 47. This is an unmanageable number. I will leave you with an idea of how large that really is.
