A pesar de ser contemporáneo estricto del Grupo de los Cinco, el estilo de Tchaikovsky no puede encasillarse dentro de los márgenes del nacionalismo imperante entonces en su Rusia natal. Su música, de carácter cosmopolita en lo que respecta a las influencias entre ellas y en un lugar preponderante la del sinfonismo alemán, aunque no carente de elementos rusos, es ante todo profundamente expresiva y personal, reveladora la personalidad del autor, compleja y atormentada. Tchaikovsky Alumno de composición de Anton Rubinstein en San Petersburgo, los primeros pasos de Tchaikovsky en el mundo de la música no revelaron un especial talento ni para la interpretación ni para la creación. Sus primeras obras, como el poema sinfónico Fatum o la Sinfonía núm. 1 «Sueños de invierno», mostraban una personalidad poco definida. Sólo tras la composición, ya en la década de 1870, de partituras como la Sinfonía núm. 2 «Pequeña Rusia» y, sobre todo, del célebre Concierto para piano y orquesta núm. 1, la música de Tchaikovsky empezó a adquirir un tono propio y característico, en ocasiones efectista y cada vez más dado a la melancolía. Gracias al sostén económico de una rica viuda, Nadejda von Meck a la que paradójicamente nunca llegaría a conocer, Tchaikovsky pudo dedicar, desde finales de esa década, todo su tiempo a la composición. Fruto de esa dedicación exclusiva fueron algunas de sus obras más hermosas y originales, entre las que sobresalen sus ballets El lago de los cisnes, La cenicienta, La bella durmiente y Cascanueces, sus óperas Evgeny Oneguin y La dama de picas, y las tres últimas de sus seis sinfonías. La postrera de ellas, subtitulada «Patética», es especialmente reveladora de la compleja personalidad del músico y del drama íntimo que rodeó su existencia, atormentada por una homosexualidad reprimida y un constante y mórbido estado depresivo.
