There was another prerelease update released on 9/13/11. It fixed quite a few bugs. On 9/14/11, 1.8 was officially released. All I noticed that was different was that the Endermen had new purple eyes and purple particles, but that's about it. 1.9 was pre-released on 9/22/11. Has tons of new features, including ACTUAL NPCs!
